About Plano

Plano History, Texas

Plano was once a small farming town in Collin County, dating back to the mid-1800s. Early settlers decided to call this place home because of its flat and fertile land which made it perfect for growing crops. The name of the city, "Plano," is the Spanish word for "flat."

The city started growing when the Houston and Texas Central Railway arrived in the 1870s. This allowed farmers to transport their produce, especially cotton, to bigger markets. For years, Plano was nothing more than a small rural town with a local economy focused on farming and small local stores.

Growth in the 1970s and 1980s

Things started to change in the 1970s and 1980s when Dallas began growing north. Plano rapidly transformed from farmland into a suburban city. Housing projects started popping up, the city's infrastructure improved, and some of the biggest companies in the country started moving in. Companies like JCPenney and Frito-Lay were some of the first to set up shop in Plano, turning it into a business center and attracting thousands of new residents looking for job opportunities and a high quality of life they couldn't find in the big city.

Plano Nowadays

Present-day Plano is one of the most developed and economically strong cities in North Texas. It's known for being a safe city with great public schools, and for the huge corporate presence in the area. Toyota Motor North America, JPMorgan Chase, and Liberty Mutual are some of the biggest employers in town.

A Hub for Business and Living

Plano is now one of the main suburban business centers in North Texas with spots like Legacy West and Legacy Business Park providing office space as well as retail, restaurants, and entertainment. Plano is on the list of the best places to live in Texas year after year thanks to its safety, high-income levels, and great amenities.

Springs

High Cycle Springs

The Workhorse of Your Garage Door System

Springs are the workhouse of your garage door system. They are the muscle that lifts the full weight of the door and the magic that allows it to float back down to earth. Most standard torsion springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles. Your garage door going up and coming back down equals one cycle.

Why 10,000 Cycles Aren't Enough

When you consider that your garage door is likely the largest and most used door in your home, 10,000 cycles can be chewed up pretty quickly—especially if your garage is more of a front door and you use it multiple times a day.

The Benefits of High-Cycle Torsion Springs

High-cycle torsion springs are a relatively inexpensive and often overlooked upgrade that can make your springs last 3, 4, or even 5 times longer. This means less hassle, fewer breakdowns, and less frequent visits from your garage door repairman.

High-cycle springs are often made with higher quality steel and are sized differently to reduce the stress on the material as the spring winds and unwinds in use. They make your door go up and come down more quietly, with less vibration as well.

Reliability and Cost-Effectiveness

When used in conjunction with regular lubrication and inspection, high-cycle springs will be one of the most reliable and cost-effective repairs you can make to your residential garage door. It’s especially attractive to families with young children or teenagers.

Openers

Wall-Mount (Jackshaft)

Compact and Stylish Technology

Wall-mount garage door opening devices, also known as jackshaft openers, are becoming increasingly popular due to their compact technology and stylish designs. Unlike traditional openers that are mounted on the ceiling, jackshaft openers mount on the wall and operate the door by turning the torsion shaft. This setup eliminates the need for overhead rails, freeing up space in the ceiling.

Maximizing Ceiling Space

This space-saving design is particularly useful in garages with high or cathedral ceilings, or in spaces with obstructions like beams. The freed-up ceiling area can be repurposed for storage, lighting, or even specialized equipment like a car lift.

Advanced Features and Technology

Wall-mount openers typically come equipped with modern features such as WiFi connectivity, smart control via a cellphone app, backup power systems, and auto-deadbolt lock security systems. While these features make operation more convenient, it's important to remember that they are still garage-door openers. If something goes wrong with the door itself, you’ll still need to call a professional for repairs.

Installation Considerations

Note: Installing a garage door opener requires a torsion spring system. If your existing springs are aging or weakening, causing the door to become heavy and difficult to operate, you may need to consider a jackshaft opener as part of an overall upgrade. Alternatively, you might want to install a new garage door and operator simultaneously to ensure everything works seamlessly together.

Insulated Steel-Back

Insulated Steel-Back Garage Doors

Strength and Durability

Insulated steel-back garage doors are often seen as the top choice for homeowners looking to upgrade their door’s strength, energy efficiency, and overall performance. These doors are built with a steel skin, an insulated core, and a steel backing. This layered construction greatly increases the door’s strength, helping it resist dents, dings, and other common damage far better than thin, single-layer, or non-insulated doors.

Energy Efficiency and Temperature Control

The insulation within the core of the door adds an extra layer of protection from the outside elements, helping to block heat transfer and maintain a more consistent temperature in your garage throughout the year. This feature is especially valuable in hot regions like Texas, where garages often face direct sunlight and extremely high outdoor temperatures.

Noise Reduction

A well-insulated door also helps block out unwanted noise from the street or loud lawn equipment and radios inside your home, creating a quieter environment in your garage and living spaces.

Variety and Customization

Most manufacturers offer dozens of different styles, colors, and insulating levels, giving homeowners plenty of options to create the perfect door for their home.

A Smart Investment

While insulated steel-back garage doors might cost a bit more upfront, they are a top choice if you’re looking for a great investment in your home’s comfort, energy savings, and overall curb appeal.
